From a purely personal perspective I struggle with the creative development elements that are required to ‘put up’ and maintain a good Blog. I have some excellent ideas but would really prefer to pay someone to carry out this type of activity. Your Blog is a great example of what I would like to achieve.

Great site, nice look and feel and interesting content. Nice job!

Hi Steve, thanks for checking out our blog. Great question!

Regarding blogs, sometimes I look around at other blogs and see what I like. I don’t copy content, but I take a mental note of elements that I find effective. I read headlines that give you a clear idea of what to expect, and short entries that go straight to the point. I try sticking to that particular model.

For creative inspiration in general, I’ll tell you about one of my favorite books; Zen in the Art of Archery - by Eugen Herrigel (less than 100 pages). This might get a little deep for some, but hey, it works for me sometimes.

The book is about a German professor who travels to Japan, and seeks “enlightenment” under the guidance of a wise master (great book!).

Before shooting any arrows, Eugen noticed that the Master always seemed to loose himself in the act of preparing for the event. This is crucial, but frequently ignored. Similar to how some people may fail to stretch before jogging or working out.

The Master summoned the right frame of mind for performing his craft in part by carrying out a simple preparation ritual. You can design your own “preparation ceremony” with whatever works best for you. Don’t underestimate the power of this simple tool. It’s broken me out of many “writer’s block” episodes.

Of course, Eugen has a horrible time overcoming his resistance to some of the teachings, and there’s a lot more to this book, but in the end, Eugen simply “gets it” and gains a whole new perspectve on life.

I highly recommend this book for anyone struggling with similar issues. Below is my Amazon affiliate link for the book. I won’t make a ton of money, but if anyone buys the book because of my recommendation, I would appreciate if they used it :) And if you read it, please let me know what you think!
